THe Hill House, Birney Montana

Started as a Dude Ranch Cabin

The residence now known as the Hill House was originally a dude cabin,  "Mr. Cook's cabin" at the Bones Brothers Ranch.  The two cattle skulls guarding the front door are purportedly from the original 3 Circle Ranch Texas Trail herd.  It was originally built for Bones Brothers in 1936.  The cabin was purchased by Theodora "Teddy" Goldsmith Lane and moved to its present location, with excellent views of the Tongue River and Hanging Woman Creek Valleys, in 1955

Named for its location on a hill overlooking Birney

Teddy was a wealthy widow from the East.  Shortly after moving the cabin to its present location, she married Robert Jones, a local ranch man.  When Teddy died in 1959, Bob inherited the cabin and subsequently married Christine Spicer.  Bob passed away and Christine gained possession.   She married Peter Valentine and they lived together in the Hill House until Peter's death.  Christine continued to occupy the cabin until 2016, when she sold the place to its current owner, Forest Dunning.

Renovated in 2018 & 2019

Al Townsend of Buffalo, Wyoming spent several months in 2018 and 2019 renovating the interior of the cabin, expanding the bathroom, refinishing the chimney wall and refinishing the interior log walls.   In 2019 Forest added a small corral and several outbuildings,
